Speakers at the formal opening of the new two-room school at Cherry Valley on Tuesday afternoon congratulated the ratepayers of S. S. No. 3, Athol, on their progressiveness in supplying such a splendid school for the children of that section. “You have a building second to none,” said Inspector Smith, “I only hope that others will go and do likewise.”

In an impressive address Professor Iva Martin of Picton sounded the key-note of cooperation and sympathy between teacher and parent. This school section is fortunate to have two good teachers, he said. See to it that a friendly relationship is established between yourselves and the teachers. Invite the teachers to your homes, and talk together about your children and their problems, he advised.

His Honor Judge MacLean, who presided over the program, paid tribute to the progressive spirit of the citizens who had made the school possible. Inspector F. P. Smith pointed out the advantage of having a school in which the first two years of High School training could be taken. Mr. C. W. Burr was heard in a witty speech appropriate to the occasion.

The new school is a fine structure built of cement block and cement brick with a creosoted shingle roof. In the basement are play rooms for boys and girls. Ventilation is cared for by the most modern methods. Cloak rooms are provided for both boys and girls. Seating accommodation is now provided for sixty, and there is space for the installation of additional seats. Heating will be done by a hot air furnace. The Kaustine system of sanitation is employed for the indoor closets.

Not the least of the good features of the new school is the large play ground which has been well levelled. The school property is about two acres in extent.

Teachers employed for the school year are Misses Pauline Vipond and Mildred Burr. In his address Mr. Smith praised the ability of both in very flattering manner.
