1934: Message Found in Bottle Has Urgent Call for Help

On Saturday afternoon, fishermen on the Lake Shore near Wellington, noted a large bottle floating on the surface of the lake. On investigation a note was noticed within the bottle.

Following is a copy of the message contained in the bottle: “Help: marooned when sail boat sank off coast of Oswego—drifting to the north—will strike near Kingston—need food.

Thomas Joyce (14)
Oswego, N.Y., 3690 W. Oneida St. HELP!”

The note was not dated and was written in lead pencil on a rough piece of notepaper. The writing was rather illiterate and seemed to have been written in a hurry or under difficulties.

The note was handed to the Picton police, who have been investigating the note. Although calls have been put through to Kingston and Oswego, no definite word has been received.

FREAK POTATO

Mr. W. J. David brought to The Gazette Office Saturday a freak pair of potatoes joined as Siamese twins. With a couple of pins for eyes, it looks quite life-like. It may be seen at the Gazette Office.

Mountain View Factory to Manufacture Butter

Mountain View Cheese and Butter Co, Frank Townsend, Secretary, Elwood Fox, maker, is today starting a new plan in cheese factory operation. Milk drawers on the various routes are taking cream as well as whole milk from the share-holders and patrons.

A one thousand pound churn and a pasteurizer have just been installed at this factory which in future will make butter from the cream it receives, as well as cheese from the whole milk. The factory also plans on year-round operation, thus taking care of its patrons who have cream throughout the winter.

It is said that some share-holders of this factory have been sending cream to various creameries, desiring to use the skimmed milk for feeding hogs or chickens, and that under the new plan of operations, these farmers intend to return to the factory.

The new plan of things was endorsed by a share-holders’ meeting recently after being introduced for discussion nearly two years ago.
